The freeholder and landlord of the shops along this part of Market Strand in Falmouth asked us for ideas to make use of the space above them. Strangely, this space consisted of an empty, concrete-framed void whose outside skin followed the lines of a former historic building on the site which had been destroyed by fire.
This previously plain and unused space has now been repurposed into a complex 3D jigsaw that offers light and airy places to live in the heart of Falmouth.
Our role included handling the planning permission and heritage aspects, and obtaining building regulations approval. During the build we worked closely with a team of project managers, contractors and engineers, providing an architectural and design watching brief.
A key challenge was to get residents up to the entrance level of the flats. Our design solution features a panoramic glass lift and a steel-structured access deck with spectacular views across the harbour.
