Our client needed a new private dwelling to replace an existing bungalow which was leaning severely, having been built on soft, wet ground with inadequate foundations. Its position is fantastic, in a secluded valley with views over Maenporth Beach and across to Falmouth Bay. However, planning rules on replacement dwellings in countryside locations like this restrict the internal volume allowed.
This is one of our many turnkey projects, in which we have acted as both architect and project manager – responsible for the whole process from initial concept to completed building. In this case the client especially praised our technical knowledge and negotiating skills, which were vital in dealing with the contractors and planners.
The new building is supported on piles which reach down to the underlying rock and raise it above the level of any once-in-a-thousand-year flood event.
Our design uses large areas of glazing, double height spaces and sheltered outdoor rooms to maximise light and give the house a modern, generous, spacious and relaxed feel. It seems much larger than it is – a bit like the Tardis.
